People often ask if having cerebral palsy enables me to drive?

Updated: Mar 12, 2021

The answer is YES!! 🚙 I passed my test first time when I was 21! I had driving lessons for around a year in a specially adapted car! At present I drive an automatic Vauxhall Mokka which again has been adapted especially to cater for my disabilities! My Adaptations: Because my left side is the strongest, and in my right side is where I experience the most stiffness and less movement, I use a left foot accelerator as opposed to a right foot one! I also have a left sided steering wheel handle which also holds what is called a 10 way infrared steering wheel control, where at a press of a button I can operate my indicators, wipers, lights, screen wash and horn! So, if you have a disability and are pondering over learning to drive, most definitely give learning to drive serious consideration, I know that every disability is different, but learning to drive and passing my test has been truly life changing, it’s given me independence and a social life, so get out there, learn to drive!! If you have any questions about driving with a disability, please put them in the comments below and I’ll endeavour to answer them all.

Best wishes
